The mid-rear-engine, V8-powered 488 GTB name marked a return to the classic Ferrari model designation, with the 488 in its moniker indicating the engine’s unitary displacement, with the GTB standing for Gran Turismo Berlinetta. The turbocharged 3.9-litre V8 puts out a robust 670 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and a response time to the accelerator of just 0.8 seconds (at 2,000 rpm in third gear), thanks in part to work carried out on the turbine to reduce friction and inertia. Ferrari’s engineers dedicated resources to perfecting the 488 GTB’s sound, too, creating a distinctive exhaust note.

Fine leather, suede, carbon fiber, and metal accents cover nearly everything inside its racy, driver-focused cabin. The interior is spacious for two adults but don’t expect much in the way of infotainment or connectivity. There’s no central radio display; most everything is controlled through a digital readout in the gauge cluster via buttons and toggles on the steering wheel, including the 488’s various driving modes and the bright red ignition switch.
